Staff Accountant - Leases

Maintain company’s rent accounting database, which includes reviewing leases, determining critical lease terms, calculating monthly deferred rent, reconciling rent payments and calculating and reconciling the company’s rent obligation.  The new lease standard allows this position to have a pivotal role in implementation of the new requirements.  Other store accounting responsibilities include telecom and utilities, among others.  Contributes to the monthly and quarterly closing processes including preparation of various expense analyses and balance sheet reconciliations.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Preparation of monthly journal entries, including moderate to complex supporting calculations
  • Pivotal role in assisting the company with adoption and implementation of the new lease standard (ASC 842), including conversion to new software package, and the project to evaluate all leases.
  • Determine classification of facilities and equipment leases (capital vs. operating).
  • Preparation of monthly balance sheet reconciliations including timely resolution of errors and issues
  • Monthly financial statement analysis, including variance analysis and explanations
  • Responsible for maintenance of lease accounting database and related journal entries, reconciliations, and analysis
  • Responsible for assigned store level expense accounting, accruals, and analysis
  • Preparation of quarterly and year-end audit schedules
  • Preparation of ad hoc analysis and projects as assigned
  • Prepare training documentation as needed for assigned responsibilities


  • Excellent PC skills (word, excel), including aptitude for working with large volumes of data
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic work environment that is deadline driven

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Project management skills or experience a plus

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS or BA in Accounting required
  • 3+ years of experience in multi-location environment; retail/restaurant a plus
  • Multi-unit lease accounting experience required

Certifications or Licenses:

  • CPA or progression toward certification preferred

Other Skills & Abilities:

  • CoStar Lease accounting software or similar preferred
  • Working knowledge of lease management and accounting software
