Job Description

The Associate Buyer will plan, communicate and direct merchandising, pricing and marketing strategies to achieve sales, margin and inventory turnover. The Associate Buyer is also responsible for assortment planning, product selection, vendor negotiation, and marketing of specific lines. This position reports directly to a Senior Buyer and partners closely with key partners to include Planning & Allocation, Marketing, Buyer Coordination and Store Operations to improve profitability and maximize shareholder value.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develops a competitive merchandise assortment plan that is customer focused and monitors and adjusts sales plan by staying abreast of industry trends and competition
  • Builds strong product assortment with suppliers, negotiates pricing and inventory in assigned categories
  • Evaluate suppliers on new and existing products, including but not limited to quality, pricing, shipping time, customer demand and return on investment
  • Manage the selection and bidding process of new and existing suppliers and negotiating contracts
  • Integrates brand, sourcing, marketing and retail supply chain functions into the merchandising process to make business decisions
  • Attends trade shows and conferences to research new industry trends and products
  • Identifies items to maximize promotional and marketing strategies and determines life-cycle of each item.  Provides input in creating the exit strategy and inventory aging standards.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze and quantify market trends

Education, Experience & Competencies:

  • College degree or equivalent business experience
  • 4+ years progressive merchandising experience; preferably with a large organization in a similar role
  • Thorough knowledge of buying and operations gained through progressive buying experience
  • Knowledge and proficiency with assortment optimization, business planning, and supplier/vendor partnerships, requiring strong decision making ability and negotiation skills
  • Ability to analyze information and influence at all levels
  • Travel required with this role overseas and to various market shows across the US
  • Demonstrates courage, ability to adapt in a fast paced/dynamic environment
  • Proficiency in Excel and Word required, and Google preferred
